Wedding and engagement parties are the best way to celebrate the happy couple before their big day. For many couples, close friends or family will throw them a fabulous party within a couple months of making the annoucement to get hitched. {Spring Into Love} Covenant Marriage for you?

Marriage through thick and thin. There is a second kind of marriage called a Covenant Marriage which is a harder bond to break than traditional marriage. You may be wondering what difference is between these two and how they will impact your decision. According to CovenantMarriage.com, "A covenant marriage is intended by God to be a lifelong relationship exemplifying unconditional love, reconciliation, sexual purity, and growth. A covenant is an eternal commitment with God. People can negotiate out of contracts, but not out of a covenant." In a traditional marriage, you can plan to start pre-marital counseling 6 months prior to your wedding. This is optional counseling based on your religious beliefs. For many denominations, such as Lutheran and Catholic, pre-marital counseling is a requirement to be married in the church.

Requirements
According to legislation (A.R.S. 25-901-906) which became effective Aug. 21, 1998, couples who are planning to apply for a Covenant Marriage License must provide a notarized statement from the clergy or marriage counselor who provided their premarital counseling. (Clerk of the Court website)

The notarized attestation/statement should confirm that:

the parties were advised about the nature and purpose of a covenant marriage;
the parties were advised regarding the limited reasons for ending marriage by legal separation or divorce; and
the parties were given a copy of the pamphlet, Covenant Marriages in Arizona, published by Arizona Office of the Courts (AOC).

Marriage licenses can be obtained in Maricopa County at the Justice Courts for $72.

{Twirl Corner} Bridesmaid Bounty Hunter

Look out, slacking bridesmaids – the Bridesmaid Bounty Hunter is on the prowl. As the co-owner of Twirl, I help manage bridal parties, and keep brides apprised of who has placed their order, and who is lagging behind.

Every week I console too many brides who are simply perplexed as to why their friends and family are proscrastinating at placing their dress order for the most important day of the bride’s life.

Having been a bride last year, and with ten bridesmaid stints under my own belt – trust me, I know both sides of weddings. Bottom line, ladies - it’s an honor to be asked to stand beside this person as she promises herself to the man she loves. Honor her back by being a supportive, and responsible, bridesmaid!

Chasing after grown women who are causing stress and hurt feelings for one of our brides is not enjoyable Bounty work. I would love for my bounty hunting days to end, and have some insider tips for both brides and bridesmaids.

Tips for Brides:

1) When asking girls to be in your wedding, openly discuss what they will be responsible for – financially and regarding their schedule.

2) Work it into your wedding budget to purchase part, or all, of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Your head is already spinning from how much the wedding will cost, so adding a little more for this shouldn’t be too painful of a stretch. Trust me – brides who do this NEVER have to bring Twirl’s Bounty Hunter on board. Plus, you can use this as their gift.

3) Be considerate of your bridesmaids when choosing dresses, but never, ever, let your vision be lost trying to make everyone happy. Your entourage will unlikelyagree 100 percent on a dress. Holding on to your vision, while being thoughtful, will keep you from an unpleasant metamorphose into Bridezilla.

Tips for Bridesmaids (or How to Avoid Bridezilla and the Bridesmaid Bounty Hunter):

1) Before you commit to being in a wedding, assess your financial situation. Can you afford to participate in throwing her a shower and bachelorette party, and buy gifts? Can you spare money for a dress, shoes, jewelry, and hair/make-up? You don’t have to have a lot of money to be a bridesmaid – I was in 3 weddings just out of college, and in several on a teacher’s salary. You may have to sacrifice a few things, but isn’t this what we do for those we love the most?

2) If you truly can’t afford all of these things, be honest and gracefully thank the bride, but opt out of being in the wedding. She will understand, and will appreciate your honesty.

3) Once you do say yes to being a bridesmaid, understand you are saying yes to whatever makes the bride happy. If you don’t love the dress she chose, too bad – if the bride loves it, wear it with grace and a smile. This is her day. Please, ladies – you surely can survive the much more stylish choices designers offer these days.

4) When given a deadline to order your bridesmaid dress, get it done before you have to. Remember – the bride is getting updates from the Bounty Hunter, so she knows who is on top of it, and who is slacking.

Above all of this, a wedding day is about two people promising their lives to each other – it’s not about the flowers, the free cocktails, or anyone’s attire. When those things become the focus, the real reason you’re all coming together is lost. Feelings and emotions can be fragile during the wedding planning months. Simply honor each other throughout the process – the Bridesmaid Bounty Hunter can cease to exist, and you can all look as happy and beautiful as these girls….

Dude, will you be my groomsman?

BLUEman: The Male Perspective

Ever thought about how you might ask a friend to be one of your groomsmen? Most guys simply just make a phone call to ask. But some grooms are worried that asking a friend to be a groomsman rather that a best man can be offensive, especially when you have two really good friends, and a coin toss may determine who you choose as the best man. Although, each can be viewed as equally important within the scope of the wedding. However, making sure the best man can ensure the ring is not misplaced before the cermony, or is not fumbled around to the ground during the cermony, should play into your decision.

So how else can you ask your friend to be a groomsman or the best man? How about mailing out an invite to be one or the other? The Wedding Chicks came of with this great idea, and they have the templates to download for it. All you need to do is purchase some A-2 note cards and envelopes, and you can print these from home utilzing the templates they provide.

So, if you're on the border as to who you should choose between best man and groomsman, let the invites do the talking for you...then, after acceptance, go out and buy them a drink and get to figuring out how to best enjoy your last days as a single man with your buddies.

{Blissful Event} Our Anniversary

I love the feeling of being in love and celebrating BIG events. My husband, Brian and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last night. We celebrated at a surprise location, Jalapeno Inferno, which has great food, amazing marg's and isn't too spicy. We started with a fabulous queso appetizer and finished with some frozen yogurt at Mojo. Eh, I was trying to be a little healthy. In the morning, Brian surprised me with a digital photo frame and a beautiful poem he wrote just for me. (**He steals my heart time and again.)

Anyone that knows me, knows I'm in love with taking pictures. The digital frame is the way to go as I have thousands of pics.....all on my computer.

I love being a wedding planner as I get to celebrate those magical moments between my couples that I felt on my wedding day. I still get goosebumps when my couples say their vows. I'm a hopeless romantic but then I'm glad I married Brian because he's the same.

Splash your aisle with color and design. Think wedding with the idea that all your guests will see this as the introduction to your fabulous day. Take some time to discover the pathway you want to create. Use your imagination and decide a look that blends all your wedding day elements tailored to your distinct budget. The ceremony is the most important focal point of your day and a perfect place to capture those memorable wedding day pictures.

Vintage
A beautiful flair with dripping jewels down your aisle way could be your style. Many brides I've talked to love the combination of hurricane vases, large flower arrangements, and colorful flower petals. The vintage feel of your wedding takes the cake in many forms of bling type jewels and a contrasting color palette.

Create a look that speaks sleek and modern without spending a lot. Your florist can help you by alternating the rows and using a flower that is full but cost effective during your wedding season. Shephard's hooks are a great way to hang a colorful twist to your aisle decor.

Butterflies and floating candles lighting the way down your aisle is simply gorgeous. The lit candles shine brightly in a late afternoon wedding. Large hurricane vases can also be used to adorn your aisle filled with flower petals. Try to mix a variation of soft colors that work well with your wedding colors.

Try this creative addition on your aisle for those with fun eco chic looks. I love the twigs and flower bunches that accent the arrangement. The distinct color contrast with this theme adds fun in your wedding. This theme also makes me think of paper pom poms and cupcakes.

Birds of Paradise flowers are a fun touch to your beach wedding. This theme reminds me of breezy, cool weather and tons of sea shells. You may find yourself using flowers to add emphasis down the aisle or hang simple flower variations on alternating chairs with ocean decor.

{Engaged Me} Sweeten Me Up

Taking your wedding to the next notch is something that many couples strive to do on their big day. Recently, dress shopping with one of my best friends, I find myself in love with the 'wow' factor dress. The dress isn't the only thing to add wow to your wedding. Start strategizing what makes you think 'now that's amazing'. This is where you want to start your wedding planning.

Cupcakes

The cake is no longer a simple frosted cake of sweetness. Wrap yourself around the idea of mini cakes at your wedding or even bridal shower. You can add glamour to your event with the easiest accent of cupcake wrappers. I love this idea because your wedding colors can mesh so nicely with the variation of designs. This helps with today's bride that wants to add a splash of modern to her wedding.

Candy Stations

Sweeten the deal. Add some color to other parts of your reception with candy stations. Everyone loves candy. It is easy to bring together the colors and flavors that you enjoy. You can hire someone to bring your sweetest desires to life and also create this idea yourself. I encourage my brides to make their wedding stand out and tell their guests a story about them. Include your fiance's favorite candies and yours in complimenting colors.

Favors and Gifts

This is the best time to start thinking about how your will thank your wedding guests and bridal party. The fun way to send home little treats is mini-brownie pops, marshmallow pops, and cookies. This is a great idea to add color to more parts of your wedding. Create gift baskets for your girls. Nothing says "you know your bridesmaids" like a basket of yummy sweets.

BLUEman: The Male Perspective

In this every changing world of technology, it’s hard to know which product is the best. iPhone or Android? iPad or Galaxy tablet? Whatever your choice may be, tablets give a much bigger viewing area to view websites or apps that you may download, that phones would not.

Say for instance you’re out driving around and doing some shopping for your wedding day: decorations, wedding day outfits, etc. You can download a barcode app that allows you to scan an item and quickly look up more information about it, and even perhaps find a better deal for that same product online.

But how about planning a wedding and having every detail about your budget to vendors at your fingertips? Any contract you sign can be easily scanned to PDF and stored on a custom folder on your tablet so you can bring it up at any time to review deliverables of the vendor, or their contact info if you need to get a hold of them.

In addition, there are apps that allow help you to plan your wedding directly from your phone or tablet. The best of these apps appears to be from WeddingWire, with nearly a four out of five star rating. Both the Android and iPhone/Pad apps have a budget tracker (to track payments made to vendors and to ensure you stay within your budgetary constraints), and a checklist that you can customize to your specific wedding day needs. If you need help finding a vendor, you can even search local vendors in your area as well.

The one thing I like about the Samsung Galaxy tablet, sold at Verizon Wireless, is you can get month to month based service on the 3G network for as little as $20 per month for 1GB of downloads/uploads. That’s plenty, because if you’re in any area that has Wi-Fi connectivity, you can most likely use that network for free. iPads have similar capabilities on the Verizon and AT&T networks as well.

If you’re a technical junkie like me, you’ll love utilizing these new easy to use and easy to carry tablets. It’s helped us a lot more in our day to day wedding planning business, and I know they will help you stay on track to your big day as well.

Visit the Bridal Shows

Start easy - You should prepare yourself now because every vendor will be vying for your attention. For many ladies, grab a few girlfriends and/or family and hit the local bridal shows. Bring comfy shoes, address labels (oh you will see why), and an open frame of mind. You’re not booking vendors on this visit but learning who to call back after the show. The Association of Bridal Consultants holds monthly, annual and national conferences for local planners and vendors. These meetings bring together HOT new ideas and fabulous vendors that my brides love choosing over and over again.

Wedding Gowns

Top priority-always looking amazing in your wedding dress. Pam Hardy, co-owner of Almond Tree Wedding Boutique commented that one strap sleeves "golden age of Hollywood" are filtering their way into bride's hearts. Brides are wanting to keep it simple. Keeping it classic on your wedding day may be a look you are aiming for. Many brides are veering away from the strapless look and adding sleeves or a partial jacket. The hardest part when shopping is finding your size if you're larger than size 12. Do your research on the type of dress you like and call the boutique prior to your visit to check for larger sizes.

Bridemaid Dresses

Keeping it short is how many bridesmaids are wearing their dresses. Sticking with the eco-friendly notion in shopping, girls are still looking for bridesmaid dresses that can be worn again. Not necessarily for the next friends wedding but out-on-the-town. Gorgeous silk fabrics like those found at Twirl Boutique keep many bridesmaids very happy. This includes dressing up the waist area with special belts and broaches.

To Veil or Not To Veil

Do you have your something borrowed or something old? Consider a vintage feather hair piece in lieu of a veil if you are looking for a classic look. In some cases, see if you mom or sister (in-law's) have a veil to borrow for your day. The nice part about finding your wedding dress so early (7 months or earlier) is many shops include your veil for free. Check out the deals you can but don't settle on anything that doesn't leave you with a glowing feeling. Try on your hair accessory and dress together with your shoes.

Most of the time, when I want to learn about one product or another, I search the website of the company for which it was created by.

I already have an idea into what the products purpose is, so before I read into what it can completely do for me, I search for the price. Sometimes, I have to search a lot harder than I really want to, thus I lose interest in the product all together. Game over.

For example, after we got engaged, Valerie and I started to put together our ideas as to what we wanted are wedding to look like.

The most important thing for us, outside of the venue in San Diego, was the photographer. So our initial web search took us to different photographers throughout the San Diego area. If I was on a photographer’s website, or any wedding vendor website for that matter, and it didn’t have a price sheet, I’d move on to the next one.

It’s no different than shopping for a car. The main company website may have starting prices of the car, but when you really want to find out what the car will cost you, you head to the dealer website. If you’re like me, you’d rather not call to find out, because they will want you to come down and see the car, and then they’ll discuss the price.

It’s important to know what kind of price you might be looking at paying before really finding out if they are worth having at your wedding. At least when you meet with the vendor, both you and the vendor will know you are somewhat serious about having them as a part of your wedding.

But the most common of all the non-priced wedding vendors happens to be the business we are in, wedding planning.

In Arizona, most summer weddings occur indoors. It can just be too hot to have a wedding outdoors. But, some people do still choose to have that outdoor wedding to take advantage of the different surroundings Arizona has to offer.

The good news is June is not as hot as it can be in July and August, plus there are ways to make the weather not as big a role in your wedding.

How are you going to ensure the comfort of your guests?

One of the best ways to do this is to rent a couple evaporative coolers. By simply adding ice, or keeping a constant flow of cold water to the cooler, the fans will generate a nice breeze of cool air to keep your guests feeling comfortable.

Another idea is to find a ceremony setting with plenty of shade. It can often feel 15 degrees cooler in the shade than in the sun.

Some people may even opt to have an early morning wedding, like 9 a.m., followed by a brunch at their reception. The advantage to an early morning, outdoor wedding, is the heat of the day is several hours away.

But if you want your wedding during the evening, you could hold your wedding at 5:30 or 6 p.m. The sunlight is still just right to have that 30 minute ceremony, and then, you and your bride can take advantage of great photo opportunities with the sun setting in the background.

If your wedding is outdoors in the summer, just be sure to take care of your guests with plenty of cold water. At a recent wedding we coordinated, the bride and groom also provided fans for each one of their guests as well. Cold water and fans helped to keep their guest comfortable, and it could work for you as well.

Have you thought about what you’d like to do the morning of your wedding day?

If you like to play golf, that might be the thing for you.

Grab the guys from your bridal party, and a few other buds, and head to the local golf course.

Before making your plans to play golf, make sure you call ahead and reserve a couple sets of tee times. You don’t want to leave anyone out.

As much as I enjoy playing golf, I’ve had my share of post golf illness. Twice, I’ve come back with either too much sun or a case of heat exhaustion.

That brings me to my list of things to remember prior to going golfing, especially on the day of your wedding:

Bring and USE sun block (use being the key word)
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (and no, beer is not a form of hydration)
Give yourself plenty of time (don’t start a tee time that’s only five or six hours prior to your ceremony. You’ll need time to relax and get ready as well)
Make tee times well in advance
Don’t forget your dad and father-in-law to be to play as well (the more people you get, you might qualify for a special rate)

Most importantly remember the main event of this day is your wedding, saying I Do, and partying the night away. So, by all means enjoy your last golf outing as a single man, but be extra careful as you want to make sure you’re 100% for when you and your bride see each other at last.

Getting to Know the Planner

There is nothing like waking up on Memorial Day knowing you don’t have to head into the office. For some of you, maybe most of you, your heading back from an extended weekend outside of the hot Valley of the Sun.

I’m just getting back from a week stay in Turks and Caicos, and a few days visiting relatives in Florida. I certainly can’t complain about the nice weather we enjoyed.

And if you’re a race fan, you had plenty of options to enjoy your Sunday as well, from the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Turkey, the Indy 500, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Charlotte.

So what makes Memorial Day so great? It’s the opportunity to roll out the grill, light it up, and grill some good American food like hotdogs, hamburgers or barbeque chicken.

This might be a perfect day to get your family and your future in laws over, if they are local, and enjoy some of the games that are likely to be on TV, or lounge by the pool, a cook a nice, simple meal.

There is nothing better than sand between your toes, crystal clear blue water, a nice cold beverage, and a sunny day.

This is why I chose to vacation this past week with my wife in the Caribbean, particularly the Turks and Caicos Islands.

This is also a great place to honeymoon with many different resorts to choose from, including three here on the Turks and Caicos Islands: Grace Bay Club, Parrot Cay Resort and Spa, and Beaches.

Grace Bay Club is an adult only hotel with nearby family villas. Every single room of the adult only hotel features a view of the ocean. The hotel’s newest bar, known as the Infiniti Bar, stretches 90 feet to the shores of Grace Bay Beach.

Parrot Cay Resort and Spa is located 575 miles southeast of Miami. This celebrity visited 5-star resort can only be accessed by small boat. An ocean facing room is a great way to spend a week at your private island destination.

At Beaches you might not be as secluded away from children traveling with their parents as you are at the other two resorts. The upside to Beaches however is the all-inclusive package. For one price, you can book your airfare and hotel, and have all your food and beverage included. Plus, any water activities.

Sydney, Australia: A Great Place to Honeymoon

One thing to look forward to immediately following your wedding is that perfect honeymoon. There are plenty of places you could go, but one that may come to mind is Sydney, Australia.

Sydney is a great place to go. It all starts with a 13 to 14 hour flight over the Pacific Ocean. That is a long flight, but a great way to pass that amount of time in the plane is to take the night flight. That way, you can sleep as you fly over the ocean, and when you wake up, chances are you’ll be landing not too much later.

There a great beaches and great tourist attractions to make the most of your Sydney honeymoon.

Take for instance the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Did you know that you can do a hiking experience up to the top of the bridge? This hiking tour lasts a little over an hour, and rain, wind or shine, it will go on. But don’t worry as you will be secure to the bridge via a rope and chain.

If you want to take most of your time enjoying the beaches, check out Bondi Beach and Manly Beach, the two most popular in Sydney. If you head to Bondi Beach, be sure to stop at Nikos Restaurant Bar for great tasting fish and chips and a cold Blue Tongue Langer. Nikos is located right on the main road and you can have a nice outdoor patio seat overlooking the beach.

To get to Manly Beach, you’ll need to take a quick 30 minute ferry ride out of the Circular Quay district. Once to Manly Beach, you can exit the ferry and take a nice outdoor walk by many shops and restaurants before getting to the beach. If you like to surf, this is a great beach to do it at.

Want to get close up with a Koala? You can at the Taronga Zoo. This zoo is located a short ferry ride from Circular Quay as well and is a great place to see alot of different animals.

After a long day enjoying Sydney and its surroundings, how about a nice glass of wine? Gazebo Wine Garden in Elizabeth Bay is a great place to try different cheeses and enjoy wines you might not get anywhere else. I suggest you try the Chandon NV Rose Sparkling wine, a combination on pinot and chardonnay.

A great place to find lots of eats, and home to the Sydney Aquarium, one of the world’s largest, is Darling Harbour. You can try a great Rocket Sandwich for breakfast at Nick’s Café, or enjoy a nice appetizer of potato wedges with sweet chili dipping sauce at the Waterfront Grill. And of course, you’ll need a little dessert at the Lindt Chocolate Café.

So whatever you decide, pick up a travel book for Sydney and do your research, as this is one place to visit that might just make for an unforgettable honeymoon.

Mother’s Day is a chance to thank your mom for all she has done in your life. Growing up, my mom would often make my lunch before she would shuffle each of my brothers and sisters off to school.

She was always that support factor no matter what trouble I was getting into as well.

But did you know that your mom can play an important role in your own wedding? It’s true.

When you hit the dance floor after your wedding, one of the optional dances is the mother-son dance. This is a chance for your mom to dance with you in the spotlight.

But before that, she is escorted down the aisle at the beginning of your ceremony, most likely just before you make your way to the front. And during the ceremony, your mom, along with the mom of your bride, could get involved by helping to light the candles that you and your bride will use to light the unity candle.

But let’s rewind to way before the wedding day.

You’ve just got engaged. Your mom will cheerfully spread the news with all her family and friends. She should also reach out to the bride’s mom to express her happiness.

When it comes time to put together your invite list, your mom can be there to help you narrow down your choices on your side of the family, you’re A and B list for example. She will most likely have all the addresses you need to ensure the invites get to where they need to go.

When it’s time for the bridal shower, your mom should attend and bring a gift as well.

Once you and your bride are registered, your mom will most likely spread the word to your side of the family so that you get what you asked for.

The two moms will typically consult with one another on their wedding day outfits as well.

Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is the groom’s responsibility. So your mom will most likely be there to make sure the restaurant of choice delivers on their promise so that you have a great party the night before your wedding.

You can see that your mom can play an important part in your wedding, much like she has all your life. Hopefully, you let her know how much she meant to you, yesterday, on Mother’s Day! But if not, make sure you do so now.

Read below some great tips by Officiant Larry James on how you could incorporate the Rose Ceremony into your big day.

There are lots of brief add-on ceremonies that you can add to your wedding ceremony. They add a touch of class, makes your ceremony different and keep your guests interested.

The “Rose” ceremony is one of my favorites.

In the rose ceremony, the Bride and Groom give each other a single red rose bud. Two red rose buds are all that is necessary. If you have children involved in the ceremony, you may have a rose for each of them too. The Rose Ceremony is placed near the end of the ceremony just “after” being pronounced wife and husband.

This ceremony is what I call an “add-on” ceremony. It is intended to be added into the wedding or renewal of vows ceremony.

In the old language of flowers, a single red rose has always meant “I love you”. The Rose ceremony gives recognition to the new and most honorable title of “Wife and Husband”.

This ceremony originates in a classic rose ceremony from a lost and elegant age. It was rewritten by the Hon. Mark Ovard and rewritten again by Larry James explaining the true meaning of the ceremony – and in ways that can endure through your married life together – this is a unique and meaningful addition to any marriage ceremony. It will also inspire your guests.

This is also a nice way of involving the mothers in the ceremony.

New twist to this idea
Couples will often stop as they exit and “surprise” the mothers of the bride and groom by handing them each an “I Love You” rose bud. The husband gives his rose to his new mother-in-law and the wife gives her rose to her new mother-in-law, whispering “I love you,” or something nice before proceeding with their exit, knowing that love is not love until you give it away!

You could also say something like, “I’m happy to be a part of the family, etc.” Be sure to tell your photographer that you are giving your “I love you” roses to the mothers so they can get that photo.

NOTE: All roses symbolize Love, but their colors have special meaning. Use the list below to choose the shade that best matches the feeling you want to convey.

Red – Love, passion, respect and courage
Yellow – Joy, friendship and freedom
Pink – Happiness, gratitude, appreciation and admiration
Cream – Thoughtfulness, charm and graciousness
Orange – Admiration, fascination, enthusiasm and desire
White – innocence, purity, secrecy, reverence and to honor those who are deceased

{Summer Selections} Out Style Your Bridesmaids

Wishes are made to come true. This is especially true at a local salon in Scottsdale called the Wish Salon. Owner, Taryn Hitchings found her niche in the heart of downtown Scottsdale. Her job is to bring out the luscious curls and accent the highlights that ladies would love to have. One of my recent brides also found herself getting dolled up in Taryn’s chair on her wedding day. As the wedding coordinator, I like to join my brides to make sure their hair and makeup ladies (and some gentlemen) arrive on time. This was easy as the hair stylist and fellow makeup artist, Shayla, were both on hand at the Wish Salon.

Now that we learned what Taryn can do, let’s learn what’s new and hot!

Brides are finding they love loose waves, fun curls, big body, and fabulous textured updo’s says Taryn. She knows exactly how to bring out your style and perfect wedding day look in every wedding setting. The best thing that I love about her work is her ability to bring out the natural beauty in every girl. Every bride wants to stand out and have each guest stand in awe of how gorgeous she looks. Think about how you want to be remembered on your wedding day. Snip out pictures of your favorite hair styles and note how you want to feel on your wedding day. Depending on the weather, think about updo’s versus halves ‘sies (half up and half down style).

Don’t forget that you need to do a trial run for before your wedding day to see how your hair will look. Take pictures and feel comfortable and confident in the style you chose. There is nothing set in stone after the trial run so make sure to tell your stylist the look you want to create. This is your day to shine and having the right stylist team will get you there.

The Rehearsal Dinner

BLUEman: The Male Perspective

One of the traditional responsibilities for the groom is the rehearsal dinner. The rehearsal dinner is that meal that takes place after the bridal party has walked through their ceremony procession, which usually takes place the day before the wedding, or two days prior.

Rehearsal dinners can either be just as elaborate as the wedding day, or much more subtle. It all depends on the type of budget you have for this occasion, but it is usually safe to plan for 25 to 35 people depending on the size of your bridal party and family members.

It’s a good rule of thumb to allow the bridal party to bring a guest of their own. And, if you have close family flying in from out of town, like your grandparents, it’s a great idea to include them as well in this occasion.

So what about the venue?

This could be as simple as a great brewery restaurant like Rock Bottom or BJ’s Brewhouse, a nice Southwestern or Mexican restaurant like Jalapeno Inferno, or a more elaborate setting like Maggiano’s Little Italy or Mastro's Oceans Club.

Let’s look at a few options.

Maggiano’s is a great place to do a family style rehearsal dinner. From a wide selection of entrees on the menu, you get to choose two to three appetizers, two to three salads, two to three entrees, two to three pasta dishes, and two to three deserts. There is plenty of food for all to enjoy and with a price range of $29 to $40 per person, it is definitely worth every penny. Plus, if you liked something more than others, you can order as much as your heart desires and the price still remains the same.

Another great place located in North Scottsdale is Jalapeno Inferno. With great margarita tastes like the Creamy Coconut or the Prickly Pear, and flavorful dishes, like The Chimichanga that Ate Nogales, you’re sure to find something for everyone to enjoy. And being in Arizona, this is a great way to treat those out of town family or bridal party members who don’t get to taste the true authentic flavors of the Southwest.

With so many great restaurants to choose from in the Valley of the Sun, you’re sure to find any restaurant to meet your rehearsal dinner needs.

A Stress Free Wedding Day

Have you thought about your wedding day in full detail? If not, you may want to take a couple minutes to visualize that day.

Close your eyes, and picture yourselves getting ready for the ceremony. All of a sudden, the photographer comes up to you and asks you if you’re ready yet for your pictures. Then, right behind the photographer is the DJ wondering if they have the correct song you’ve picked for the brides walk down the aisle.

The groom’s buddy then tugs on his shoulder and says the caterer wants to know if the ceremony is going to get started on time, and if not, how far should the dinner be pushed back?

The men finally get ready to take pictures, but then realize they don’t have the boutonnière pinned to their jackets yet. And it’s then he realizes he has yet to see the florist, and then scrambles to find her.

In the Phoenix metropolitan area, on average, a couple is likely to spend $2,000+ on a quality photographer, $1,000+ or on a DJ or musician, $8,000+ on the venue and catering, and $1,500+ on flowers. Are you still considering all your options for friends and family to help on your wedding day? I’m sure you just thought your wedding would happen without any issues. Dee, my recent newlywed wanted to shed some light on her wedding planning experience. Dee considers herself very ‘organized’ (yes, she knew exactly how she wanted every detail in her wedding) and wasn’t sure if hiring a wedding planner would be the best with her modest budget.

Dee was the bride who loved searching and reading through all the wedding blogs to find out as much information as possible. Her motivation revolved around, “finding the right venue, the perfect dress, finding pictures of the perfect cake, and more.” As her Day-of-Wedding Coordinator, I worked to bring together all her wedding vendors so as Dee puts it “simply relax on my day”. I love exactly how Dee said this so I included it all for you.

I learned that you can be as involved (or not as involved) as you want when you hire a planner. If a bride doesn't want to put the time and energy into planning, then hiring a planner and opting for a full-service package is the way to go. But, if a bride wants to be involved (like I was!), then checking out the day of package is awesome, because everything on the day of is handled for you. Your planning and preparation is done. So, when it's your day, it's time to just sit back and enjoy. And, you can do that, because the planner troubleshoots, keeps the timeline on track, and works with all your vendors to make sure everything is taken care of and your day comes together smoothly. The key to enjoying your day is staying hydrated, eat snacks throughout the day and allow yourself plenty of time to stay calm. Recently, my wife and I were in Las Vegas surprising her Aunt and Uncle on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. While they enjoyed a nice show at the Aria, we headed out to Pampas Churrascaria, a Brazilian steakhouse located in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

We first fell in love with Brazilian steakhouses while eating at one in New Zealand on our honeymoon, Wildfire Churrascaria. Like the one in New Zealand and in Vegas, most all Brazilian steakhouse offer an all-you-can-eat menu selection, and that of course is what we chose.

Throughout the course of your meal, you’ll be visited by the wait staff with many different meat selections, from barbeque pork, to top sirloin, to smoked ham, to bacon wrapped turkey, to spicy chicken, and more. The flavors are never ending, and for around $40 to $60 per person, depending on the range of food you want to eat as much of you can until you can’t eat no more, the value is definitely there.

While people watching at dinner we observed a table of 15 to 20 guys out on the town for a bachelor party. They of course were having a great time, most likely just kicking off their night of fun. I mean, what better way to start a guy’s night out than with a manly feast of succulent meats?

There of course is a local Arizona spot that you can visit to get your bachelor party started. It’s located in Scottsdale and goes by the name of Fogo de Chao.

But if you do happen to entertain your bachelor party in Vegas, make sure you walk by in front of Planet Hollywood and nearby in their Miracle Mile Shops during the course of the day prior to your meal. You’ll likely run into someone passing out free drink and buy one get one free all-you-can-eat meals at Pampas Churrascaria.

Save some money, eat a delicious meal, and have plenty left over to gamble or party the night away with your closest buddies.

There comes a point in time when a makeup artist is no longer an option, but a requirement. Your wedding day is not something you want to scrimp on. These shots of your face will be plastered all over your walls and the photo galleries of your family for years to come. Finding the makeup artist that flatters all your fabulous features and hides that one zit you manage to unleash on your wedding day is a necessity. Yes, just like in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you too will find your hormones fighting the stress and excitement of your day.

The things that you should look for in a great makeup artist are simple: flawless and natural style, gentle and soothing nature (you’ll need this when things are feeling tense), polished, and professional. I love working with makeup artists myself because everyone loves being pampered. There’s something intoxicating while sitting there in that chair waiting for those sweet touches to your face. I recently worked with Shayla Mitchell of Makeup by Shayla who delivered perfectly. My bride left her chair looking so natural and yet, stunning in the way that her MAC makeup accented her model-like features. MAC is traditionally known for their high volume color palette but the right application of the wedding day coloring will leave you looking absolutely natural.

Remember to have your initial trial done a month or two before your wedding with any makeup artist. This will help you feel comfortable with the artist’s style and makeup cosmetics. You want to be sure that you take a few pictures of your look post-trial and note your skin’s feeling throughout the day. You can expect your trial and wedding day look to start at $150.

Planning a wedding takes so much energy, sweat and tears. The pure joy is walking down the aisle to your bridal march music heading up to the man of your dreams. The main idea that most brides forget is the part after the wedding. The many years of learning and growing together through the vow words you spoke on that very wedding day. I recently celebrated a fabulous wedding weekend in the city of quickie weddings and high-roller nights (..also day’s too). The wedding weekend was actually to celebrate the union of my aunt and uncle from April 10, 1960. Yes, it was a 50th Wedding Anniversary in Las Vegas. I didn’t know them when they were married but to know them now you would be so impressed. The romance is seen in the way they look at each other. My Aunt Jeanette understands the dry humor of her hubby Michael as he listens so quietly while we get lost in our chatty talks. Giddiness comes over me when I'm talking with my auntie.

Brian, my hubby and I created a poem/picture frame (goldish frame- tradition says it's the color for 50 years) as a gift to give them. A poem by my favorite writer, the BLUEman (aka Brian) perfectly captured their life together.

I’m in an industry of love but no one really talks about after the wedding day. I think it’s special to celebrate the marriages that started and will last a lifetime…let’s congratulate my friends and family who have beat the odds.

Congratulations man…you’re engaged! Now ask yourself: what's next?

Today, the modern groom doesn’t just sit back and say to his bride to be “Yes, whatever you want” when it comes to the wedding. You do have some responsibilities that fall on you, more than anyone else, including:

Choose your best man and groomsmen
Discuss the style of your wedding with your bride to be and make sure you both know the attire you want to have. Do you want the wedding to have a laid-back feel, or do you want it to be formal?
Transportation – make sure you assist in arranging this for the bride to get to the ceremony, along with everyone else in your wedding party. If your reception is a drive away from the ceremony location, you’ll need transportation to get your entire wedding party there
Arrange for accommodations, if needed, for out-of-town guests (ex. Room blocks at a specific hotel)
Gifts – purchase for both your bride to be and for your groomsmen
Obtain the marriage license – without it, your wedding is not official
Plan the rehearsal dinner and prepare to make a toast at the rehearsal dinner thanking everyone for coming out to your wedding

Besides the duties specific to the groom, here are ways you can get involved in the planning process of the wedding with your bride to be:

Determine your wedding budget and make a plan to stick within the budget. What are the most important things in your wedding to consider, i.e. planner, photographer, flowers, DJ, etc.
Select a date, time and location for your ceremony and reception
Create your guest list and make sure to not go over the number of guests you plan to have
Book an officiant or minister for your wedding
Work with your planner to hire the vendors for your wedding day

One of the things a groom should work on, and not wait to the last minute to do, is plan the honeymoon. Discuss where it is you both want to share your first week or two as a married couple. And make sure to follow our tips to planning your honeymoon. By booking at least six months out, you’re likely to save a lot more money than booking a month or two out.

Fromage! This also means “cheese” in French. My best friend travels the world and brought back that fun translation she said each picture taken in France. Just like any great vacation needs great pictures to detail the journey, your wedding will begin a journey for many years to come. Every photographer provides the option for any budget to include an engagement session to capture those special moments before you become husband and wife. Take advantage of this time to find a place that tells a story about you as a couple, says Photographer, Marcia Mauskopf of Marcia – The Art of Photography. Marcia recommends taking a trip out to Congress Street in Tucson for those couples of artistic nature or the graffiti walls downtown for a modern spin on photography.

Dress Essentials

Not sure what to wear? Talk to your photographer about your perfect location to document your engaged life before married life. Whites and stonewashed denim fit the Tempe Town Lake backdrop whereas; black would best suit your graffiti walls of downtown. Bring a few different shirts or outfits to change. Don’t worry, you can change on location and ideally create a photo mix by changing up the scenery.

New Best Friend

Your photographer will soon know every favorite look or as some say “sides” that you will want on display for all to see. Make friends with your photographer by getting started ASAP on your engagement session. This will help you feel comfortable being the object of the lens for hours on your wedding day. Marcia says that trust is the single most important component to successful wedding photography. I have to agree that if you feel comfortable each shot will look relaxed and more natural. Pick a picture perfect setting closer to sunset for the most dramatic look with unforgettable shots. Have fun and play to the camera!

How to use Engagement Photos

Talk to your photographer about their photo packages. You will want print versions of your pictures now or later. Add coffee table photo books to your package. Other items to consider include photo charm bracelets, purses, make-up bags, and matted prints suited for signatures during your reception. You may also want to create a picture table for your reception area that highlights a few best photos of you along with other framed pictures of your parents. This makes a great montage table for all your guests to see.

Destination Love || Belize- The New Honeymooner Spot

As you dream about the new lands to discover on your honeymoon, try to imagine a far away destination. Honeymoons are no longer just a trip to Hawaii or a local beach resort. For some honeymooners looking for adventure, a honeymoon in Belize just may be the ticket. The key to enjoying a destination honeymoon is great planning skills with the help of a travel planner or someone like my BLUEman (he planned our entire honeymoon-see last Monday’s Google mapping blog). Your wedding day will fly by faster than your heart will admit. Getting married is a day that most girls dream about but dream farther into the time after your wedding. I’ll also share some advice from my recent honeymooners, Daris and Jason, who visited Belize and had the most amazing experience.

Now, let’s get started on your honeymoon!

TRAVEL BUG- (This is a great thing! - I’ve said before)

Traveling abroad may seem scary with culture differences, but head to Belize and you’ll discover that English is the official language spoken. Once you arrive, the currency exchange is easy and you usually can exchange money at the airport. The accommodations in this resort lining area provide amazing food, scenic views, and numerous activities to keep you entertained.

ADVENTURE – HERE YOU COME!

Once on your way, remember your scuba gear as you explore the second largest barrier reef in the world and the infamous Deep Blue Hole, says newlywed Daris. Look into scuba classes at your local sports shop before you leave to make sure you’re prepared. Daris recommends if you travel through San Ignacio, be sure to stay at the Mystic River Resort and take in the ancient Mayan ruins in Caracol or Tikal. Bring a few pairs of hiking shoes and your bathing suit! Other outdoor adventures include zip lining, canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding. During the evening you enjoy on-site cuisine and also learn about the different constellations for those star gazing lover’s.

Another great spot to discover is in San Pedro at Ramon’s Resort or La Victoria Resort, says newlywed Daris. Enjoy your honeymoon at this location: snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, sunset cruises, cave tubing (sounds like fun!). I started thinking about the show Man vs. Food when Daris explained the best food spots they loved in this area. Here are some of their recommendations: Mango’s, Caliente’s, Elvi’s Kitchen, the Blue Water Grill, Sunset Grill, and El Forgon.

BOOK YOUR HONEYMOON!

The first big trip as newlyweds should be high on your list. Be sure to book your honeymoon around the same time as you order your wedding dress (at least 6 months in advance). The most cost-efficient and time-saving way is to book with a travel planner. I’ve heard numerous stories in the last few months of couple’s who didn’t have a planner during the Mexico traveling scare and didn’t know their honeymoon room was closed down until they arrived. For most couples, once you book your trip, you don’t worry too much about it until you board the plane after the wedding. SPECIAL EDITION || Easter Day Treat Recipe

Easter Egg Dipper Treats™
Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 24

Ingredients
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 package (10oz., about 40) regular marshmallows

OR

4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels or milk chocolate morsels
5 teaspoons shortening
Multi-colored sprinkles

Directions

1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using 1/4-cup measuring cup coated with cooking spray divide warm cereal mixture into portions. Using buttered hands shape each portion into 2 1/2- x 1 1/2-inch egg shapes. (Or, coat insides of plastic snap-apart Easter eggs with cooking spray. Press cereal mixture into eggs. Remove cereal mixture from plastic eggs.) Cool.

4. In small saucepan combine chocolate morsels and shortening. Cook over low heat until melted, stirring constantly. Dip bottoms of cereal eggs into chocolate. Decorate with sprinkles. Place on wax-paper-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm. Individually wrap in plastic wrap. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:

In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Continue with recipe as directed above. Microwave cooking times may vary.

Recently, Blueprint Affairs had the pleasure of sitting down with Tailored Travel Services to find out the top places to honeymoon and some helpful tips.

Honeymoon Destinations

According to Eva Guibert, CEO of Tailored Travel Services, the top three spots for Americans to honeymoon outside of the States is the Almalfi Coast and Venice in Italy, the islands of Maui and Kauai in Hawaii, and Bora Bora in Tahiti.

In addition, Arizona brides tend to look at Los Cabos and Cozumel, Mexico as honeymoon destinations as well.

How About a Travel Agent?

“When you’re going to start planning your honeymoon, consider going with a licensed and industry insured travel agency,” Guilbert stated.

The advantage of booking with a travel agent, especially one that specializes in the area in which you honeymoon, is they have the experience in putting together the kind of package you need to make your honeymoon truly special.

If you book a travel agent, Guilbert said that you should “plan to meet with them if you can, or at least speak on the phone several times or by email.”

Having a travel agent plan your honeymoon may not only save you time, aggravation or stress, but also money. Travel agents are there to put the plans of the honeymoon together for the busy bride and groom.

Going out of the Country?

Nowadays, if you plan to take a honeymoon outside of the States, you need to make sure you have a proper form of ID, i.e. a U.S. Passport.

“Your travel agent should be able to let you know what will be required for travel,” Guilbert remarked. “But you should also look into the consulate of the country you’d like to go to for detailed information.”

If you plan to travel to what might be considered a “questionable country,” make sure you look at the U.S. Government Travel Warnings.

Try to pick something close by if you are deciding on a destination wedding to save money. Since I'm based in Arizona, Phoenicians have the bonuses of traveling to the beaches of California for a breath of sea air. Even with a modest budget of $25,000 you and 80 of your closest friends and family can enjoy your beautiful day at a local seaside venue. You can typically plan on 50% of the guests RSVP'ing. Many of your closest friends and family are easily able to pack their cars or hop on a quick plane ride for a 3 day weekend trip. International Weddings

If you never thought about a destination wedding, this is best time to sneak in a fun vacation and have all your closest people enjoying it with you. A couple years ago, I went to a wedding in Costa Rica and 80 guests arrived. I was impressed how many people showed up and actually did excursions such as zip lining and surfing throughout the days leading up to the wedding. Zip lining and surfing were a new adventure I learned and made so many amazing memories during that wedding weekend.

If you’re having a destination wedding, one of the first things to do is to check around the area. But with budgets a little tight these days, the alternative to flying out a couple weekends throughout the planning process is to use technology that is readily available.

I’m talking about Google Maps.

Simple set your browser to http://www.googlemaps.com/ and begin your visit to the far off destination in no time.

Some helpful tips about Google mapping:

In the upper left hand corner is the search feature. If you don’t know the exact address of the venue you selected, or if you’re just beginning your search, you can simply enter the city and state (ex: San Francisco, CA) and press Search Maps.
If you want to see the landscape around the area or what the buildings look like, make sure to select the Satellite option in the upper right hand corner of the map image.
Create a Google account. This will allow you to use the “My Map” feature where you can save maps related to your wedding location, and even a separate map for your honeymoon and the sites you may wish to see.

Once you do the basics as described above, you can click on the little red bulb with an “A” related to any of your searches to then search nearby hotels, restaurants, etc. You name it, Google map will find it.

One of the features I like about Google Maps is the street view. Zoom in as far as you can next to a restaurant or hotel you may have found, and now you are on the street looking at what everything looks like around it. This is the best way to get familiar with the area before even getting there.

One of the best things to do, is after you plotted your rehearsal dinner location, surrounding hotels, nearest airport, etc, you can share this with your wedding guests using the Send feature.

So, whether you chose to have that destination wedding or not, Google Maps is a great way to get familiar with the area before even stepping foot on the ground, or to best prepare an out of town guest for their trip to your wedding destination.

Tips To Know || Bridal Dress Fittings

Do you know what to bring to your dress fitting? Whether you’re the bride or bridesmaids, it’s important to come armed with all your wedding day tools and accessories. Choosing the best time to pick your dress is ideal because the time you actually try on your dress will set the wedding 'wow' factor.

Accessories

Be sure to pack your earrings and necklace that you want to wear during your final fitting. This is the best time to match up the bling you bought for your day. For many bridesmaids, the best gift you receive may be the jewelry from your blushing bride. Don’t forget to bring the bra and underwear you want to wear. Too many times I see very sheer dresses with peek-a-boo undies that should stay in the dresser drawer. Choose nude color full or thong underwear. This includes your bra, which may be strapless, stick –on or build it into your dress. (check with your seamstress)

Last but not least, bring your veil and shoes to your fitting. Find an area with great lighting to match up the coloring of your mother’s veil (if you decide on this for ‘something old’) which varies over the years. Fitting your shoes will also give you some experience bending and walking with your wedding shoes. Plan to wear them at least nine hours from start to finish. Be sure to find shoes that coordinate your dress and your comfort!

Best Time

Order your dress at least 6 months before your wedding to have the bridal dress selection of your choice. Keep tabs on your order as bridal shops have many orders coming and going. Double-check the style and color for all of your dresses including your wedding dress. Be proactive not abusive to your wedding powers. Then, arrange your fitting two to three weeks before your wedding to test out the length, fit, and make adjustments as needed.

An Audience for You!

Bringing a group of friends and family can be overwhelming if you are bringing your entire bridal party. Try to schedule your bridal dress fitting outside of the bridesmaids and mother dress fittings. This will alleviate much of your stress and you can take in all the excitement of your wedding.

Expectations are Everything!

Don’t be surprised if you see your dress and forgot what gorgeous gown you picked. You can expect to do two to three fittings until you get the perfect fit. Know that whatever dress you love, your new hubby will be amazed the moment he sees you walking down the aisle in your new gorgeous gown.

Over the past week I heard a post wedding night story from a couple married only a couple months.

The couple said their bridal party snuck into their room prior to the end of the reception and had proceeded to place red rose petals across the bed.

Not an uncommon thing for the bridal party or wedding planner to do. It adds a bit of romance to the end of their night just spent celebrating with many friends and family.

The only problem was this time the rose pedals were picked from around the property, and without any careful checking. The pedals placed on this couples bed had bugs in them, which sometimes can be hard to see when the people making the romantic gesture are caught up in the moment.

So after coming back to their room and clearing the bed of rose pedals, the couple woke up the next morning with bite marks on their bodies. Thankfully the bite marks were not completely all over their bodies.

The lesson to learn here…if you’re in the bridal party and have access to the room while the bride and groom are enjoying their reception, throw around the pedals with caution.

The easiest way to avoid tracking bugs into the room is to gather some of the pedals used at the ceremony. This can be from the flower girl for instance. Or, you might want to pick up some rose pedals from a nearby flower shop. But if you do end up picking some rose pedals from around the property (certainly not advised), make sure to check over them carefully.

Attending a social gathering over the weekend, a really good friend of mine came to me and handed my wife and I an envelope.

In the envelope was a one year anniversary card, as well as a gift card to a nice restaurant.

To say I was surprised would be an understatement.

In the four weddings I took part in as a groomsman (one) or a best man (three), I never thought to send a gift to my buddy after their first year of marriage. I would acknowledge it with nothing more than a call or text saying “Happy Anniversary.”

So am I being rude? Is this kind gesture that my friend and his wife displayed to me something that should be common place?

I would have to say no to both questions. One year anniversary gifts are not to be expected.

But, if you so happen to be one of the latest men to celebrate your first year of marriage and so happen to get a gift from a good friend of yours…by all means accept it with a smile.

After all, that made me realize even more than I have aligned myself with great friends in my life, and we should all be thankful for that.

Tips to Know || Maid of Honor Duties

Just like the best man planning the bachelor party, the maid of honor is responsible for hosting the bachelorette party, in addition to assisting with or even hosting the bridal shower. These parties can range in their design and creativity…that of which I will be blogging about in the future. But for now, let me share with you my thoughts on what a maid of honor should do, at the very least.

Pre-Wedding:
Sometimes, the maid of honor accompanies the bride to be in going to a registering with different places for her wedding gifts, and even attend bridal expos with the bride to be as well. But one of the biggest things a bride most likely will want to share with her maid of honor is the dress shopping and fitting.

Just before the wedding day is the rehearsal. The maid of honor should assist the coordinator in gathering the other bridesmaids to walk through the rehearsal. After the rehearsal, the maid of honor is of course expected to attend the rehearsal dinner.

The Wedding Day:
Come the wedding day, the maid of honor really steps up to the plate and helps with a lot of things, including:

• Helping the bride get dressed
• Assist the florist in distributing the bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages to the wedding party
• Keep all bridesmaids on track and ensure that come the time of the ceremony, they’re ready to go
• The best man holds the rings, the maid of honor holds the bride's bouquet during the ceremony
• Signing the marriage license along with the best man
• Bustles the bride's wedding dress for the reception
• Help the bride in the washroom
• Just like the best man, the maid of honor delivers a toast

These are just some of the more important things a maid of honor is to do come the wedding day. But of course, the maid of honor should be prepared to do anything the bride asks of her to make her day that much easier and that much more enjoyable.

There are a lot of helpful sites out there so that the maid of honor is well prepared. So get on that computer and Google away.

Mr. Groom: This is a big day for you. You’re getting married. So in preparation for your wedding day, have you thought about what your best man is responsible for? Have you had a discussion with him as to what you expect of him come your wedding day?

Besides throwing a bachelor party, your best man is the key to getting a lot of things accomplished on your wedding day. Those things include:

Looking after the needs of the Groom (you)

Making sure the other groomsmen are staying on track and in place prior to the ceremony

Tips To Know || Wedding Superstitions

Are you fearful of rain on your wedding day? Does catching the bouquet bring visions of wedding bells to your mind? Many people who have been to a wedding have witnessed rain drenched reception areas and could have potentially caught at least five bouquets with no wedding in sight. In some family superstitions, the girl who catches the bouquet is the next to get married in her family. I first caught my first bouquet when I was 15 but it took many, many years after everyone in my family (so it seemed) married before it was my turn. There are so many tales and some strange things that people say that don’t actually come true – but it may alarm you.

Rain

This is my favorite tale about something that every bride dreads. Months of planning to have drops of precipitation muddy up the aisle, drench the guests, and delay the ceremony in some cases. Some tales say having rain on your wedding day means: that you will have many children, many years of wedded bliss, or shed many tears in your married life.

The Dress

It’s a total no-no for anyone but the bride to wear white on the wedding day. However, some mother’s, mother-in-law’s (think of the movie Monster In Law – funny!) or even guests attend a wedding wearing white. Some tales say: a bride who wears white will be joyful on day, a ripped dress means your marriage ends in death, and making your own dress will bring tears for each stitch sewn.

The Big Toss

Challenging every single guy and girl at your wedding to participate in the bouquet and garter toss becomes more difficult as everyone gets married off. However, the fun still lives in throwing the bouquet and garter. For the garter toss, skill is not needed but attention should be made on how your groom removes the garter from your leg. Some tales say: for every inch a man removes with his teeth is the years of married bliss, the man who catches the garter is the next to be married, and this holds true for the women catching the bouquet.

Superstitions and myths are hard to forget when you’re told about your wedding day. One superstition that most brides hold near and dear to them is about the four “something’s”. You know, something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. This requires you planning to bring one item for each of these things on your wedding day to wear. No matter how great or strange the superstition may be, remember your wedding day is about new beginnings for a life to share with your husband. Don’t get stuck on the tales but live in the moment.

When shopping for that perfect engagement ring, there is always a question that men ponder: Should I or should I not bring my girlfriend with me?

That’s a very good question, and I think most men are split on the answer. There are of course some pros to bringing your girlfriend with you. For example, you’ll know what carat she wants (most women would like at least a carat), in addition to the shape, the style and the cut. And if you don’t know her ring size, you’ll find that out too.

The downside to taking your girlfriend ring shopping is the element of surprise is gone. She may also feel like she had to pick out the ring herself and that she may have pushed something she really wanted on you, regardless of cost.

So what are some ways to overcome this situation and do the shopping all on your own? Do your homework! Do your research and ask her questions in a subtle way over a period of time so that when you do go ring shopping, on your own, you’ll have a great picture in your mind as to what she wants.

Here are some tips:

Find out her ring size (and don’t worry if you’re off, most jewelry stores will gladly take it back and resize it if need be)
What type of setting does she like?
What’s her style? You can likely find this out by looking at the jewelry she already has and wears.
Talk with her girlfriends and if you need the help, take one of her girlfriends with you, so long as you know they won’t spill the beans.

The Wedding Party

Are you ready for a party made just for your wedding? And we’re not talking about the usual wedding and reception. We’re talking about a pre-wedding party, and no, not a bridal shower, bachelor or bachelorette party either. This is called a Social.

In Canada, a social is an event held to help raise financial capital for your big wedding day. And in these economic times, it could be just the ticket to a debt free wedding.

Imagine walking away with $7,000 or more to cover your upcoming wedding.

Here is how it works. Find a reception hall or cheap venue to hold your Social. Find a DJ to spin the music and layout a dance floor. Get a liquor license, if you are required to, and provide alcohol for this one night event. Make sure your coordinate with the selected venue. They may provide this liquor license for you, and you want to make sure you know your limits. But if you’re making money off of the bar, you’ll need some sort of license.

This is not a party reserved for just the bridal party and guests…this is a party that you want to bring as many people as you can to, whether you know them or not. But make sure you limit the number of tickets to the space you have. If your hall will hold 200 people comfortable, don’t sell 250 tickets.

The key to making money is to limit your expenses. Don’t go to a venue that is too pricey, and don’t spend more than you need to on a great DJ, otherwise, your ticket sales will do nothing more than pay for the cost of those expenses and you won’t walk away with any profits, which is the goal of this Social. And if you need to, don’t forget to pay for some security so when the money comes in, it’s protected.

One of the ways to draw people into the party is to raffle off prizes throughout the night. Advertise a big giveaway when selling tickets to get their attention. Even consider holding a silent auction. Keep people entertained as much as possible. And at midnight, throw out some free appetizers and keep the party going until closing time.

The goal is to have people spend money, so when it’s time for your wedding, you’re spending less.

Victory Cigar?

The night is winding down on your wedding day festivities. You’ve watched your beautiful bride come down the aisle, you said your vows, and you said “I do.” The reception went off without a hitch. The first dance was just how you both pictured it. And, if you were creative, you followed the lead of TLC’s Rock the Reception. The best man and maid of honor gave their toasts and everyone danced till they could not dance no more.

And then, your father comes up to you, or your father-in-law, and he wants to share in a moment with you by lighting a cigar and kicking one back with him and the rest of the guys. It’s his way of saying “congratulations” and what some guys might call the “Victory Cigar”. So the question is: do you do it?

Here are two things to consider before you light up that cigar:

Is the bride to be going to get upset if the groom lights up the cigar? The bride might not want to kiss cigar breath afterward. But you can likely convince her by chewing some gum after the fact.
Does your venue allow you to light up inside or outside? Most places in Arizona would not allow that to take place due to current laws in place that prevent restaurants from allowing patrons to smoke inside, but you might be able to outside.

I can honestly say that lighting up that cigar with my dad, brothers and friends near the end of my reception was a great experience for me. I looked forward to my wedding day, and being able to say thank you in the man sort of way to the guys for supporting me every step of the way meant a lot.

Nothing beats a great workout. I’m slowly building myself up to running each day. The experts say if you set a goal like running a ½ marathon, tell those closest to you so you are held accountable. If you knew me, I’m not much for running and you may be the same way. My husband on the other hand, loves to run 5 miles for fun. Running does seem to relax me and I feel pumped with energy to take on my day. It could be those endorphins that are racing through my body.

Have you ever tried doing a workout while stressed or worried? Here are some things you can try while trying to plan your wedding (which, let’s face it is stressful in some way) or just trying to feel more relaxed.

Running

Where are you running to? I really have a hard time putting my hands around running for fun. However, there are so many health and beauty benefits. All of us want to be healthier and have a great body. It’s just in our nature as women. I love the blunt honesty in some of the blog names like “a chubby girl running” or “A fool of myself” but there are focused ones like “5k to marathon training”. Running and staying active will be a great way to burn off some stress.

Yoga

I’ve never been one to really enjoy doing yoga, especially Bikram Yoga. However, if you have the Jenny McCarthy Wii- Your Shape system, you’ll love the music and how relaxed you feel. I struggle with some of the downward dog or warrior poses but take heart that marthastewart.com makes it easier to do with picture and instructions. If you’re like me, I love to see it and hear how to do it. You may consider joining a class at your local gym. Sometimes, seeing everyone else molding themselves into awkward poses takes the stress off you.

Fitness Boot Camp

No one likes to pretend they are kicking their own tush for military training but this is a sure fire way to get in shape. I’ve participated in Sgt. Hadley’s Fitness Boot Camp in Arizona only to realize I never pushed myself alone. This former Marine makes sure you burn 400-6oo calories each session for 6 weeks. Check out this and other boot camps near you but make sure to bring a friend with you. This will keep you motivated each week and spending time working out with friends is a great way to stay connected. Let’s face it, our lives are busy and stressful, but having close friends gives us that strength to keep going.

Dee first met her husband to be, Jason, online and their first date was October 9, 2007 (which happened to be her sister's wedding anniversary). After dating for just over two years, Jason and Dee were hanging out the day before Thanksgiving. Dee made her way upstairs after a long day to rest her eyes. It was then that Jason came up to the room and laid down beside her. Jason then told Dee he loved her and asked her to marry him, and of course, she said yes.

Dee and Jason are thrilled to be getting married at Sassi in Scottsdale, Arizona in the spring of 2010.

Valentine’s Day is a day that you’re supposed to share your love with your significant other, perhaps your future bride to be.

The normal idea on Valentine’s Day is to go out to a nice restaurant, just the two of you, and enjoy a romantic dinner with one another. But there is another option I feel will give you even more props than buying a meal, and that’s making dinner. This is something I did last night, and actually enjoy doing on a normal basis. And being married doesn’t change that for me.

When you’re single and still trying to win her heart, cooking a nice dinner for your girlfriend could be just the thing to win her heart for good. It also is a romantic way to make that proposal for her hand in marriage.

But what if you don’t know how to cook that well? Maybe your definition of cooking is boiling water and throwing a box of noodles in there to mix with the powdered cheese. Don’t worry, there is a solution to this problem that will give you the confidence to make a gourmet meal without attending a two year culinary school.

Try a cooking school like Sweet Basil. There are so many options to choose from including poultry, beef, chicken, and seafood classes. And if you want to learn to make the perfect dessert that will melt in her mouth, try taking one of their many dessert classes.

How about a date? If you want that romantic night out, Sweet Basil also offers cooking classes you can do as a couple. Make a dinner together with the training of a professional chef and enjoy it with a nice glass of good wine.

Dessert

There’s no denying that a way to a girls heart is sweets. Some of you may have your favorite cupcakes, candies, or ice cream. However, this is one recipe for greatness that is easy to make or slip to your beloved for their gift to you – Chocolate Covered Strawberries. Super Bowl Thoughts...

The game is over and some of us might already be counting down the number of days before the next season kicks-off. In case you’re wondering, that is 181 days until the first pre-season game and 213 days until the first regular season game. So for those of us that enjoy playing fantasy football, that’s a long time to analyze the players and determine who you might pick come your draft day.

For now, let’s focus on some of the great things that came from this Super Bowl. And I can do that even after my Jets were downed in the AFC Championship just two weeks prior. For one, Drew Brees, the quarterback I would have kept with San Diego if I was San Diego’s GM rather than Philip Rivers, got his first Super Bowl win and the first for the Saints in their franchise history. Secondly, if you watched, you just made history. This was the highest rated television show ever at 106.5 million viewers as reported by the Nielsen Co.

Other than the game itself, a lot of people watch to see what commercials are the funniest. It’s my personal opinion that the level of humor in these ads has gone way down over the last couple years. If I had to pick my top three, they’d probably be the Bud Light House, Volkswagen Slug-Bug (because we play slug-bug all the time) and the Doritos Smack commercials. Time is ticking on finding the perfect wedding venue. No one said this would be an easy task. On another thought, you really may have no clue what to do when it comes to scouting out a venue and figuring out the next steps. I’m here to tell you that this is your first step after the engagement because your entire wedding hinges on the location of your ceremony and reception (of course, this is easier when both at same location). The venue sets the tone and allows you to select colors, styles, and food choices that fit your preferences.

Close To Home

Choosing a venue close to home saves time and money. This allows you to closely monitor all the special details and take tours of the venue open houses. This is a great way to select local vendors and have a green, eco-friendly wedding. Arizona also provides gorgeous sunsets and many fine venues that range from reception only sites to full-service resorts. Some venues require your vendor choices be selected from a preapproved list. This may help you find ease at “shopping” at once but may limit your favorite photographer that you can’t live without.

Stateside Selections

In all its beautiful colors and landscape, Arizona does miss the unmistakable beachside views that you yearn to see in your pictures. You may find wish to for a beach wedding soaking up the rays on the beach. Take a weekend trip six months or more prior to wedding to meet with potential vendors. Contact area venues for their vendor recommendations as this will be a current referral (vendor lists are seldom updated online).

Tropical or International Calling Card

The economy is not the only factor driving this exciting romance getaway. Your friends and family play a large part in attendance on your day. Determine if your friends and family will need a passport and/or visa for your destination wedding. I strongly recommend using a travel planner for booking hotel and flights. The Swine Flu was a big roadblock for weddings and honeymooners in 2009 causing resort closures all over. Be prepared for any unexplained natural or biomedical disaster and renovations that may leave you stranded. Destination weddings can truly be a breathtaking and magical experience for you and your guests when planned out.

Flying…Can Be Humorous

Over the past month I’ve took three trips either work related or for pleasure. It got me thinking. Flying can sometimes be rather fun, but only if you have the right personnel that help to make it fun.

Take in point the quick flight to Vegas. People are often cheerful because they are on their way with the thoughts of pulling the slot at the right time to win that jackpot, or thinking they will clean house at the blackjack or poker tables. The flight attendants, on Southwest anyway, will take care of you. If you’re headed there for your bachelor party or bachelorette party and let them know it, they will likely assist in liquoring you up, with no cost out of your pockets. Heck, you need that money to hand to get you going on running the tables, right? This fun and exciting time catching a plane to a destination is much like taking that flight out on the start of your honeymoon. On your honeymoon, you just can’t wait to get there and see the places you’ve want to see…most likely after the bedroom…

But the flight back, that’s the downer. Coming back from Vegas, everyone is depressed because they lost a couple hundred or in some of the worst cases, a couple grand. But there is always that one person that is happy as all, because he hit it big, at least in his mind he did. This can be compared to the flight home post-honeymoon. You wish your time with your new found life partner could last even longer while laying on the beach on some exotic island, but now you're back to life as it was and is…only this time, you have that person officially by your side.

So what are some fun things a flight attendant or gate keeper might say to brighten you day, or at least make you laugh and bring a smile to your face, on either your journey to or from your vacations or business ventures?

Recently I waited in the “A” boarding line and a lady approached the ticket check-in with her boarding pass and she was on her cell phone (it was also 6:30 in the morning). The guy said to her, “Who you calling this early in the morning? If you were calling me I’d be pissed.”

One time, after everyone boarded the plane, the gate keeper spoke over the intercom saying, “I’ve enjoyed my time on the ground with you all as we waited to board the plane.” Silence in the galley. “No…seriously.” Still some silence. “And I’ll be the first to say that I’m happy to see you leave.” Then laughter rang about. How’s that for some fun before an early morning flight?

Anyway, point being, it’s nice to fly with a little humor, makes sitting in a plane for three hours not too bad of an experience right from the get-go.

Finding the perfect venue really has its advantages. If you search for a venue site that really suits you, be sure to ask if they have amenities that will benefit you and your fiancé. The best way to really enjoy the week leading up to your wedding and on the wedding day is by soaking in the experience. This is the one time that your family will enjoy pampering and relaxing (with you). Check the venue website for special accommodations and the concierge for any services they recommend.

FREE Anyone?

All your wedding planning will eventually surmount to the one big day, and I give you permission to enjoy it. In many cases, the golf club you booked will also provide your fiancé and a small group of his friends a free round of golf (including the golf carts) on the wedding day. I’m really into relaxing so the spa area is where you would find me. Check out the spa area, pool, and massage services available at your venue. Booking your room and wedding day services also prompts them with special promotions for the bride and groom.

Take Me There

You may find it easy to wake up and walk outside your door to your own personal chauffeur service. Many hotels and venues also provide free shuttle service to and from your rehearsal dinner. In some cases, you may organize shuttle services for all your wedding guests from the hotel to the wedding site (if driving to two different locations). This saves your guests the hassle of finding parking and allows those who want to indulge in alcohol, a safe way home.

Just In Case!

During your travels (either by plane or across town), you may need to have your dress and your bridesmaid dresses steamed. The upright steamers are a hassle to carry with you so check on borrowing the venue’s site machine. Or, look for a dry cleaning service near your venue to take your dress for a quick fix. It’s best to hang your dress outside the bag to prevent deep wrinkles. Don’t forget to take your emergency wedding day kit with you because things do happen and you want to be prepared.

What can be better than a weekend away from work? How about a weekend just for the guys! This is not something you get to do every month…it might only become a reality for you once or twice a year, but the guys only trip is just as much a fabric of our being as drinking beer and eating wings. We need that time to unwind and socialize with those that know us better than ourselves, our friends.

So what are the destinations close by that you could head off to with the guys? A short hour or so flight or a nice five to seven hour drive, and you could be in an array of different places, including San Diego, L.A. and of course the ultimate, Vegas! But if you’re like me, you enjoy going back to the college you graduated from in the Midwest, in the cold blistering snow, to hang with your friends and watch a few basketball games. Hit the old college bars you used to hang out at, grab a bite at your favorite pizzeria and even catch a game or two while critiquing the student sections latest chants and celebration styles.

Of course, if driving long hours or flying out of state is not an option for you, you can plan an in town guys weekend. Big time golfers, consider staying at a golf resort and hitting the links. Perhaps your timing is right in line with the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Then you could not only golf, but hook yourselves up with VIP treatment and watch how the pros do it.

Whatever your guy’s weekend might be, the point is, you need to have one. It brings sanity to your crazy world, and allows you to let loose with those guys you know you can let loose with. But the key to a very successful, not going to get in trouble guys trip, is to have that friend in the group that knows how to make sure boundaries are not crossed. They will protect you from going overboard and make sure that everyone returns back to reality with their heads held high.

So guys, plan your weekends wisely, enjoy them, have fun, be safe, and return home to your loved one in one piece. Do those things and your sure to have plenty more guy’s trips to come.

Venue Me || Bring Your Fiance

After my Open House visit last night with the Boojum Tree in Phoenix, I realized that there is more to searching for a venue. The one fine element includes your fiancé. I have always heard how many fiancé’s are either stuck at home or arrive kicking and screaming to the venue. Last night was such a surprise to hear each fiancé engrossed in the conversation and asking thoughtful questions. I have to wonder what the new shift in newly engaged couples has been to provoke such a bonding experience in wedding planning. Many of you are shaking your heads that this will never be your fiancé. Heck this is football season and sports or not, some men are hard to convince.

Sports Junkie

A little extra thought is required so think of the evening possibilities when it comes to your Sports Junkie. Consider the scheduled venues to not overlap on his favorite game night. This is a good time to clue into what team he roots for and check the game rosters. Make a checklist of your favorite venues and focus your attention on those open houses. This may include scouting out the local pubs and sports bars close to the venue. He will be thrilled that you helped him catch the live action immediately following your venue venture.

Late Nighter

Working a full-time job for your Late Nighter may not be flexible for a weekday walkthrough. Being thoughtful to present your fiancé with available dates and times to schedule a one-on-one walk through with the event staff is ideal. Many locations provide weeknight and weekend tours. This will show your fiancé how important the venue selection process is to you and help him keep his calendar in order. Try to not overwhelm yourself or your fiancé with too many appointments in one week. Pace yourself and have fun. Bringing snacks or a quick bite after work for him will also ease his hunger pains and help him be more agreeable.

Not His Thing

Some men prefer to have the bride do all the planning and the cliché is “they just show up at the wedding”. Your wedding is meant to represent a day that joins both of you in a loving, committed relationship. In this case, think like a man and schedule venue tours around things that really interest him. Many vendors including cake, DJ, photography, and catering will indulge different sides of his personality with their presented services. I always find that the cake and catering vendors strike it easy with the groom’s by offering delicious samples. Do your research on what your fiancé likes because he may just buddy up with the DJ over their favorite 80’s rock tunes.

OPEN BAR...Sort of

You’ve picked the venue. The band is all lined up. The flowers are set to be delivered. The food you’ve chosen will wow your guests. What’s left to decide other than the obvious: to open bar or not to open bar? That could be one of the biggest questions of all.

In today’s weddings, men are fronting the financial responsibility just as much as women are. The traditional ways of a woman’s family paying for the wedding are less and less apparent. And let’s face it…you need all the money you can hold onto so that your life post-wedding is not off to a rocky financial start.

So how can you save a little dough and still provide a nice experience for your VIPs? As a man, you want an open bar. Let’s be honest with ourselves, when you’re invited to a wedding, one of the very first thoughts to pop into your head as a man is “open bar?” You want to drink, you want to let loose, and will gladly do so if it’s not on your dime. But now you’re the groom. Now you have to step up, right?

There are several options. Other than the obvious to have it open all night, or to a certain time in the night, you could limit the open bar for the cocktail part of your reception, the one-hour post-ceremony, while your wedding party is taking pictures. The only downfall is people will see that open bar window, and take full advantage. Plus, if someone is halfway done with their drink and decides they don’t really like it, they will leave it behind and go pick up something else. That just cost you $8 in leftover alcohol. As my dad always said, no beer gets left behind…but sad to say, people do ignore that idea.

But here is an option that worked, it can help you plan to spend no more than you can afford: Drink Tickets. By creating drink tickets, you can choose to take care of your VIPS (your parents and bridal party members) or everyone at the wedding reception. If you have 17 people in your bridal party, including parents, you can hand each of them three drink tickets good for a beer, well drink or glass of wine. Knowing that is 51 tickets, figure the high side of $8.00 per drink, and you’re sure not to spend more than a little over $400.00. But if you want to take care of everyone, consider handing out two drink tickets to each person. Let’s say you have 100 guests, including your bridal party, then that is 200 drink tickets and you can budget, on the high side, spending no more than $1,600.00 for alcohol. Anything beyond the drink tickets you hand out is a cash bar. So you’re not on the hook.

Whatever you decide, drink tickets are a great way to limit the amount of money you spend on the technically open bar. The great thing is, no matter how many you hand out, you can budget the max amount you will spend out of pocket. Better yet, you’re likely not to see all of the drink tickets turned in, hence, you save money for better things, like the honeymoon!

It’s officially wedding season. As we kick off the New Year with countless engagements, it’s time for brides to check local magazines for their best wedding venues. Does looking at countless pictures sound familiar? I sometimes can’t decide what I really like by pictures alone. Is it the creative photography that captures your eye? Or, does the venue really have the appeal to make your wedding perfect?

Satisfying as it is, traipsing all around to find the perfect venue is no one’s idea of fun. Narrow down a few and take advantage of open houses to see the venue at its prime. Since most weddings are typically held during the evening. You also have an opportunity to meet other key vendors you need. Take some time to check out some local beauties in Phoenix such as Boojum Tree – Hidden Gardens for a fairytale location filled with nooks and archways around the property ideal for wedding pictures. They host an open house every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

Another hidden treasure is Virginia’s House located in Glendale. This historic home brings together the family atmosphere and romance from the 1930’s. I find myself in love with their venue that easily captures the essence of a charming backyard wedding. Their next open house is on Thursday, January 14th from 4-8 p.m. Open Houses provide you the chance to visit the properties you have been eyeing and choose your perfect venue.

Wait…we’re getting married this weekend?

Guys, unless you don’t care about sports, make sure to not forget about the big game. Whether it be opening weekend of March Madness, the BCS National Championship, or the Superbowl, make sure you studied up on those future dates to ensure your wedding is free and clear of the big sports weekends.

Marrying the women of my dreams was absolutely no mistake. The mistake was in the date, March 21. We wanted that wedding date to be one year after we had met, it would be romantic. But then, guys start calling me following receiving their invitations asking what gives? I wondered, and then it hit me. This was the opening weekend of the NCAA Final 64 March Madness Tournament. Something I loved going to the sports bar with my dad, brother and friends to watch a keep tabs on who was winning their respective pools, but it was too late, the date was set. If this is the case with you, and it’s locked in with the venue, invitations are out, etc. then stick with the date. You’ll be glad you did. But if you’re still deciding on a date, keep the sports calendar in mind.

But maybe getting married on the big sports weekend will help you remember your anniversary for years to come. My dad got married on the weekend of Rutgers home football game, and he remembers that every time his anniversary approaches, as will I with the opening rounds of March Madness. The cool thing is, my wife actually wants to go to Vegas for one of our future anniversaries to bet on the college action, so I can’t complain too much, now can I.

But during my wedding weekend, we had fun with all the guys watching the games that Thursday and Friday, so it wasn’t a total bust. After all, the games last 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the sport, but your marriage is meant to last a life time, so bet on the latter first and foremost and make your wedding the greatest days of your lives!

Prepped To Go || New Beginnings

You may have decided that after the horn blowing and confetti flying night we love to call New Year’s Eve is over, this may be the time for new beginnings. New beginnings are almost synonymous with weddings. Any couple you talk to on the street (think Jay Leno show-Jay walking) would wish for their day to be perfect. However, wedding perfection is really something out of the movies. There will always be overbearing families like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding or wacky situations like in Sex and the City. This time of year is all about reflection and hope for the future that you will have what you didn’t get this year. This month has revolved around preparation for your day.

Are you really prepared? Besides being financially ready, there are many things to consider:

• Where will you live once you get married? If still in school, do you plan to move?

• Have you decided on marriage preparation course for your wedding in fall 2010?

• Besides wedding finances, are you planning to indulge in a honeymoon? – Every couple needs a vacation together to jump start their new life

• Are you ready to get married? - Sometimes being the last one married seems depressing but don’t take the plunge just because “everyone else does”

• Are you planning to have children? If so, how soon and how many? – Talk to your fiancé seriously about this topic as they may be completely opposite

• If your religious views differ, are you ready to set aside your faith for your partner? – Consider marital counseling or someone unbiased to help you on this path

• Second or third time around. Does you fiancé want to celebrate your wedding as large as the previous marriage? – Tricky topic if one of you has never been married

All I want for Christmas is…

So you’ve done all your holiday shopping, but have you considered the one thing your girlfriend might want more than anything this time of year? Yes, we are talking about an engagement ring. Some people might say Christmas is not the time to propose, that it should have its own separate special day.

But no one said you had to propose right on Christmas. There is Christmas Eve with family and friends, or the many holiday parties that you’ve likely been invited to. Of course, you might find that special moment when the two of you are alone away from the hustle and bustle. If your girlfriend’s favorite holiday is Christmas and all she’s done is smile because it is the holiday season the last few weeks, then this could be the perfect time to pop the big question.

But if Christmas Day is the right time for you, here’s how you could go about the proposal. First, give her a gift you know she’d really love. For this, you might have to actually LISTEN to her while you’re driving together in the car from place to place. You would be amazed at how much you can pick up from your loved one as to what they like and don’t like in a ten minute car ride.

After all, if she so happens to say, you know, I’d love to go the Nutcracker sometime. You might want to take a mental note, so that if you are driving by yourself and the radio ad so happens to mention the Nutcracker is in town, you can get the perfect gift.

So now the gift is open, you’ve enjoyed dinner with family and friends. Now you can do this one of two ways, you can propose in front of family and friends, or take her for a nice private walk. Think about it, she may have thought the day has come and gone and it couldn’t get any better, but you’ve surprised once more, and hopefully, she says the words you want to her: YES!

Being recently engaged or getting married soon should be the happiest time of your life. Consider all of your financial options, and not just those your fiancé (e)’s family support for this crunch. A beautiful wedding decorated with all the glitz and popping colors across the aisle. Picture yourself, surrounded by a delicious cuisine fit for a king, mouth-watering garnish and the smell of sweet orchids in the air. I bet you didn’t picture the rain that’s quickly approaching your gorgeous day with dark clouds and rain drops. This seems like a dream come true minus the buckets of rain drops falling on your guests along with your dress. Rain or Shine. I’m sure you’ve heard this type of policy for your favorite band or artist. (This means that the event will continue on regardless of the weather conditions.)

When it comes to planning, have you researched or asked the vendors all the right questions? Rain, shine, sickness, and health sound more like wedding vows but should ring in your ears like a sound of a secure wedding day. Fair or not for the most important day, carefully review your contracts and ask the questions for experiences beyond your control. Carefully plan for the unexpected and your wedding will bring buckets of happiness not tears. Here are some questions to rehearse and review:

You Can Have Your Cake...And Eat It Too

The Grooms Cake. The question is: have you heard of such a thing? Prior to my wedding I knew nothing of the sort. In fact, it wasn’t until attending a wedding after that of my own that I saw a grooms cake. It was in the shape of the Chicago Bears logo. Now I’m no Bears fan, but the cake was pretty cool looking, and just as tasty as the more elaborate three-tier wedding cake.

So I wondered, how did I let this pass me by? I went cake shopping with my wife, but the seller of the cake never mentioned that I could have a cake that represented me as well. So I feel it’s my duty to inform all those men out there that you can have your cake and eat it too! If you’re into sports, you could have any type of cake to signify your support for your favorite team…the Yankees, the Diamondbacks, the Suns, the Coyotes, and the list goes on. They will even make that cake in the colors of your favorite team. And then there are the fillings. Weddings and men, two things that might not go together quite like peanut butter and jelly. More like peanut butter on a burger? Saw it on Man vs. Food, thought I’d throw that in. The general stereotypical thing is for a man to just let the woman do all the planning for the wedding. The man doesn’t want to get in the way of what is supposed to be the biggest celebration of a their joint life, of course parents see this as only the stepping stone to what will be a bigger day for them: grandchildren.

Throughout my time of going to weddings, seeing people go through the process from getting engaged to getting married, men really have stayed out of quite a lot, focusing more so on the bachelor party and what his buddies might do to him. Outside of the bachelor party, the only thing men tend to get involved in is the finances, especially as the more traditional ways of paying for a wedding seem to be a thing of the past. Men will say, here’s the budget, run with it, and don’t go over. But is that really the way for any man to be involved in THEIR wedding? That’s right, the wedding day is just as much about the groom as it is the bride.

With the general stereotype of men and weddings, I’m here to tell you that men, if not wanting to, should be involved in the planning process, and not just from the financial budgeting perspective. Sure, some things are better for a woman to do than a man, i.e. flowers, but there are plenty other things a man could and should be involved in. Like, selecting a venue, picking out the food and drinks to be served, cake tasting, they style of what he will wear, the music, and more.

With that said. I’m here to introduce myself as a male wedding blogger. I helped my wife when it came to the process of planning our wedding, and was involved every step of the way, from engagement through the honeymoon. I enjoyed every minute of it. And now, it’s time for me to share my insights and thoughts on weddings and the male role from engagement, to the planning, to the bachelor party, to the wedding, and beyond, and not necessarily in that order.
